Why Develux is different

We don't paint over problems. We solve them.

Most coatings fail because of what's underneath them. Mill scale that wasn't removed. Cut-edge corrosion that was painted over. Powder coating that wasn't profiled. Failed substrate adhesion no topcoat can rescue.

At Develux we specify systems substrate-up. Laser cleaning, sandblasting, or mechanical preparation matched to the material. Primer, intermediate, and topcoat from TOR Coatings or HD Sharman. Documented dry film thickness — so the system performs as the manufacturer intends.

  • ✓  Full surface preparation to ISO 8501 standards
  • ✓  System-based coatings, not paint by the litre
  • ✓  Trained on TOR Coatings & HD Sharman systems
  • ✓  One contractor end-to-end. No subcontracted prep.

FAQ

Cladding spraying FAQs

How long does cladding spraying take?

A typical industrial cladding project takes 5–15 working days depending on the size of the building and preparation required.

How long should a sprayed cladding system last?

Service life depends on the substrate condition, the system specified by TOR Coatings or HD Sharman and the environment. Where a project qualifies for manufacturer cover, we'll set that out in writing alongside the specification.

Can cladding be sprayed while a building is occupied?

Yes. We work in occupied premises using methods appropriate to the environment, including out-of-hours scheduling where required.

Do you spray UPVC and aluminium cladding?

Yes. We coat profiled metal, aluminium composite, UPVC, plastisol, PVF2 and polyester factory-applied finishes.

Cut Edge Corrosion Treatment

Cut edge corrosion treatment seals rust spreading from the cut edges of profiled metal roof sheets, using HD Sharman Seamsil and Delcote systems to restore weatherproofing and extend roof life by 20+ years.

Get a Quote
The problem

What cut edge corrosion is

Profiled metal roof and cladding sheets have a factory-applied coating system. When sheets are cut to size during installation, the cut edges expose bare metal underneath. Over 10-20 years, weather attacks these edges, rust spreads, capillary action draws water into laps, and the entire roof eventually fails.

Treated early, cut edge corrosion is reversed. Left untreated, it forces a full roof replacement.

FAQ

Cut edge corrosion FAQs

What is cut edge corrosion?

Cut edge corrosion is rust that starts at the exposed cut edges of profiled metal roof and cladding sheets, where the factory coating ends. Weather attacks the bare metal, rust spreads under the coating, and capillary action draws water into laps until the roof eventually fails.

How long does treatment last?

Specialist cut edge systems have a long service life when applied to a properly prepared substrate. Where manufacturer cover is available for a given project, we'll confirm the terms in writing.

Can cut edge corrosion be reversed?

Yes, if it is caught before the substrate is structurally compromised. Loose rust is removed, a converter is applied, edges and laps are sealed, and a protective topcoat is applied. Severely degraded sheets need replacement before the system is applied.

What systems do you use?

Primarily HD Sharman Seamsil for cut edges and laps, HD Sharman Delcote for full roof restoration, and HD Sharman Plygene for gutter lining. All applied as an approved HD Sharman applicator.

FAQ

Protective coatings FAQs

What's the difference between paint and a protective coating?

Paint is decorative — it changes how a surface looks. A protective coating is an engineered system (primer, intermediate, topcoat) specified by the manufacturer to protect a substrate from corrosion, abrasion, fire or chemical attack for a defined service life.

How long do protective coatings last?

Service life depends on the substrate and system. Industrial steel systems typically perform for 15–25 years, gutter linings for 25–50, intumescent fire protection for 15+, and balcony deck systems for 10–15 — when correctly specified and applied.

What manufacturers do you use?

We work primarily with specialist UK coating systems from TOR Coatings and HD Sharman, alongside Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine and other leading manufacturers where the specification calls for them.

Is manufacturer cover available?

For qualifying systems and projects, yes — terms depend on the system specified, the substrate condition and the documented preparation grade. We'll set out what's available for your project in writing alongside the specification.

What substrates do you coat?

Structural steel, profiled metal cladding and roofs, fire doors and roller shutters, loading bays, gutters, balcony decks, heritage metalwork, masonry and timber. Each substrate gets a system matched to its environment and expected service life.

Surface Preparation. Done Properly.

Industrial surface preparation by Develux covers abrasive blasting, laser cleaning, mechanical preparation, Peelaway chemical stripping and infrared paint removal, delivered and documented to ISO 8501 cleanliness grades.

Get a Quote
Our preparation methods

Six methods. Right one for the substrate.

01

Laser Cleaning

Non-abrasive, chemical-free. Removes rust, paint, oil, grease from metal, stone, and masonry. Heritage-safe and occupied-building-friendly.

02

Sandblasting

For heavy corrosion and structural steel preparation. Documented to ISO 8501 Sa 2.5 or Sa 3 cleanliness grades.

03

Mechanical Preparation

Grinding, sanding, stripping. Controlled, low-impact work for sensitive environments.

04

Peelaway Systems

Safe chemical paint removal from heritage substrates. No abrasive, no airborne dust.

05

Infrared Heat

Controlled paint removal using infrared. Used on period properties and listed work.

06

Timber Restoration

Epoxy resin repair systems for damaged or rotten timber elements.

Which method, which substrate?

SubstrateRecommended method
New mild steelSandblasting (Sa 2.5)
Painted claddingPressure wash + mechanical
Heritage metalworkLaser cleaning
Listed building stoneLaser cleaning
Period ironworkPeelaway or laser
Occupied premisesLaser or infrared
Rotten timberEpoxy resin repair

Why preparation determines performance

Coating systems only perform when the substrate is prepared to the specified cleanliness grade. Sa 2.5 for steel. Sound substrate for masonry. Properly profiled metal for adhesion.

Painters skip this because it's expensive and time-consuming. We don't — because the system is only as good as what sits underneath it.

Every preparation method we use is documented. ISO 8501 grades photographed, substrate conditions logged — the record specialist coating systems are designed around.

FAQ

Surface preparation FAQs

Why is surface preparation important?

Around 80% of coating failures originate in surface preparation, not the coating itself. Manufacturers require the substrate to be prepared to a specified cleanliness grade — ISO 8501 Sa 2.5 for steel, sound substrate for masonry — before any coating is applied. Skip preparation and the system simply doesn't perform.

What is laser cleaning?

Laser cleaning is a non-abrasive, chemical-free preparation method that removes rust, paint, oil and contamination from metal, stone and masonry using a controlled laser beam. It produces no airborne dust and no waste media, which makes it ideal for heritage substrates, listed buildings and occupied premises.

When should sandblasting be used?

Sandblasting is the standard preparation method for heavy corrosion and new structural steel, where ISO 8501 Sa 2.5 or Sa 3 cleanliness is required for a manufacturer-backed coating system. It's not appropriate for heritage stone, period ironwork or occupied buildings where dust control is a constraint.

How do you prepare for heritage work?

For listed buildings and heritage substrates we use laser cleaning, Peelaway chemical systems or controlled infrared heat — all non-abrasive methods that protect the original substrate. Method is selected per element and documented before any coating is applied.

Need specialist preparation?

Why laser matters for heritage

Sandblasting and chemical strippers cause damage that can't be undone on listed and period substrates. Laser cleaning removes paint, rust, and contamination without touching the original fabric underneath.

It's also non-abrasive, chemical-free, and quiet, important on occupied properties and in residential areas.

This capability is rare in the Midlands. Most contractors outsource laser work or refuse it. We do it in-house.

Paint vs Coating

Why Develux isn't a painter.

The difference between repainting in 3 years and protecting an asset for 25. There's a 40-year cost gap between those two outcomes.

Why preparation matters more than paint

80% of coating failures originate at the substrate, not the coat. Adhesion failures. Substrate corrosion. Improper cleanliness grades. Failed primer bonding.

A painter applies film on top of whatever's there. We strip the substrate down properly, neutralise corrosion, profile the surface, and only then apply primer.

It's the difference between a coat of paint and a system that lasts.

Manufacturer cover

How cover works on our projects.

A plain-English look at when manufacturer cover is available, what it depends on, and how we set it out alongside the specification.

Develux is trained on the specialist coating systems we apply, including those from TOR Coatings and HD Sharman. For qualifying systems and substrates, a project can be put forward for manufacturer-backed cover. Whether cover is available — and on what terms — depends on the specific system, the substrate condition, the documented preparation grade and the environment the coating sits in.

We don't promise a fixed number of years up-front. What we do is specify the right system for your asset, document the preparation and application properly, and confirm in writing what cover (if any) the manufacturer offers for that project. That gives you something honest to plan against rather than a marketing figure.

What manufacturer cover depends on

  • Substrate condition and preparation grade (e.g. ISO 8501 Sa 2.5)
  • The exact primer, intermediate and topcoat specified
  • Dry film thickness measured and recorded
  • Environmental conditions during application
  • The manufacturer's maintenance schedule being followed

What you receive on completion

Every project ships with a written specification, a DFT log and a sign-off pack. Where manufacturer cover applies, the relevant documentation is included with that pack.

Cover, where issued, is generally tied to the asset rather than the owner — useful context for facilities managers and property owners planning around future sale or lease.

Want this set out for your project?
